Swirl

Portland $ ****
Swirl is a fun, new frozen yogurt place on Hawthorne. Cheap, self-serve, with a variety of flavors, and open late with free wi-fi, I don't have any complaints with this place. My friend and I even did some homework here (what could be better than reading about capitalism while eating frozen yogurt??).

Bread and Ink Cafe

Portland $$ **
My friend and I were not very pleased with this place. We were on Hawthorne and wanted to try something new instead of going to our usual, Pho Van. We've always walked by Bread and Ink, so we decided to try it. Right away, we got the feeling that it was not going to be our type of place. As soon as we walked in, we were seated by some person in grungy black clothes and tattoos. Now, I'm not judging her style (I have nothing against black clothes, trust me), but when I want a cozy dinner, this is not the person I want to have serve me. Plus, our menus were paper. That they reuse for each customer.

Okay, now the more important part: the food. The food was also unimpressive. My friend had an oily burger; I had a beef brisket sandwich. Both were mediocre, and they had gotten my order wrong: I wanted fries but they gave me a salad. So they brought my fries eventually.
Service was alright, atmosphere was alright. In conclusion, I probably won't come back here. Bread and Ink is not awful, but it's definitely not worth it for me. I hear their breakfasts are pretty good, but I doubt I'll come back when there are so many other breakfast places I love.

Belly Timber

Portland $$$ ****

This is an interesting restaurant. Starting with the name, down to the menu, everything about this place is a little odd. For the atmosphere and food, the prices are reasonable. My friend's burger came with an actual beef bone that she was supposed to suck on. I won't be running back, but I will definitely return sometime to see what other strange things they'll do with their dishes.

Pho Van

Portland $ *****

This place made me realize my love for pho, which is a Vietnamese noodle soup dish. Pho Van is a Portland chain. I usually eat here on Friday afternoons before 5 because the pho is only $5 instead of $8. Large portions that taste even better when you add one of the many hot sauces available, Pho Van is perfect for rainy Portland days. My friend and I have become regulars at the one on Hawthorne.

Chez Machin

Portland $$ *****
Oh how I love this place. My friend and I are regulars here, always coming for their nutella crepes after wandering around Hawthorne. Everything about Chez Machin is charming: the tables are covered in red checkerboard tablecloths, the walls are rustic red, Edith Piaf plays on the stereo, and the waitress is adorable. Ask for the back room, and the hostess will show you to a hidden back room that is usually emptier and has a fountain.
